Pieces drive labor

Cabinet jobs are controlled by the number of doors, drawer fronts, box openings, end panels, shelves, and detailed profiles. A small kitchen with ornate doors can take longer than a larger room with flat surfaces, so the calculator prices components instead of square footage alone.

Preparation protects the finish

Cleaning grease, labeling parts, sanding, caulking seams, filling dents, priming, and waiting for proper cure time often take more labor than the final coat. If existing coating condition is unknown, add time for adhesion testing and a small repair allowance before quoting.

Handling time matters

Removal, transport, rack setup, drying space, reinstalling hardware, and touchups create labor that customers rarely see. Include shop time or site setup time so the proposal does not depend on perfect conditions.

Define the finish standard

Agree on sheen, color change, grain visibility, inside surfaces, hardware replacement, and acceptable imperfections. A clear finish expectation reduces disputes and makes the calculator result easier to turn into a written scope.

How much labor does cabinet painting actually take?

Cabinet labor scales with component count and finish expectations, not square footage. Start by counting doors, drawer fronts, visible box openings, side panels, islands, crown, toe kicks, and any glass or detailed profiles — then add time for labeling, removal, cleaning, sanding, masking, priming, coating, drying, reinstalling, and touch-ups. A simple job with flat doors and light prep moves quickly; a similar-size kitchen with grease buildup, damaged edges, or a dark-to-light color change can take much longer even though the door count is identical.

These ranges assume the estimator counts parts and adds separate time for setup, handling, drying space, and final adjustment — cabinet labor should never be treated as a wall-painting square-foot problem. Labor increases further when cabinets need heavy degreasing, old coating removal, grain filling, repairs, caulking, masking, hardware replacement, color changes, or a high-smoothness finish expectation. Removing doors, labeling parts, transporting them, setting up racks, waiting for dry time, flipping parts, and reinstalling hardware all create real labor even when spray time itself is short — and coating, sandpaper, masking materials, cleaner, caulk, filler, strainers, tips, and protective supplies should be priced outside the labor calculation entirely, in the material allowance field above.

This sample kitchen includes 24 doors, 10 drawer fronts, 12 cabinet box sections, one island end panel, standard degreasing, sanding, adhesion primer, and two finish coats — a color change from stained wood to a painted satin finish. Cabinet interiors, new hinges, and hardware replacement are excluded from the base estimate.

Doors average about 0.65 labor hours each once removal, cleaning, sanding, priming, coating, drying management, and reinstalling are counted — 15.6 hours for 24 doors. Drawer fronts average about 0.45 hours each (4.5 hours for 10). Cabinet boxes run heavier at about 1.15 hours per section because masking, working in place, edges, and customer protection slow the work — 13.8 hours for 12 sections. Add 8 hours for setup, labeling, shop/rack preparation, transport, final walkthrough, and touch-ups, and the base labor estimate is 41.9 hours. Because this job is a stain-to-paint conversion, a 20 percent risk factor is added for adhesion testing, extra sanding, and detail work, bringing final estimated labor to about 50 hours.

The customer-facing proposal should state whether interiors, shelves, underside panels, crown, toe kicks, glass doors, hardware, soft-close hinges, and repairs are included or excluded, name the coating system, and note that existing wood grain, old damage, seams, or prior finish defects may remain visible depending on the selected finish standard. Doors and drawer fronts finished off-site need drying and curing time that can limit daily progress even when spraying itself is fast — reinstalling too early can damage the finish, so separate working days from cure time in the schedule you promise the customer.

FAQ

Questions before quoting cabinet work

Why not price cabinets by linear foot?

Linear-foot pricing can be a quick screen, but labor is driven by parts, profiles, condition, handling, and finish expectations. Two kitchens with the same length can require very different labor.

Should hardware be included?

Only include hardware if the scope says so. Reusing existing hardware, drilling for new pulls, replacing hinges, or adjusting doors can each change labor and material cost.

What's the biggest hidden risk?

Adhesion and contamination. Grease, silicone, furniture polish, old coatings, and unknown clear coats can create finish failures if prep is underestimated — which is exactly why the risk factor exists in the worked example above.

Why does a small kitchen sometimes cost more per door than a large one?

Setup, masking, and access time get spread across fewer doors. A 6-door powder room vanity job still needs full setup, drying space, and cleanup, so the per-door cost is naturally higher than on a 24-door kitchen where those fixed costs are amortized.
